To accommodate its growing workforce, the occupier of One Cabot Square embarked on an expansion plan which initially involved the construction of a new 9-storey building on the adjacent vacant site. To maximise the floor footage, CWC and the architect devised a scheme that enabled us to construct the building over the dividing service road. This solution also enabled the new building to be linked to the existing 20-storey building.

The scheme was further developed to remove part of the exterior wall from the original building, allowing the adjoining floor plates to be fully contiguous. CWC achieved this by developing a track-mounted lifting device which removed the pre-cast cladding panels, and lowered them to the ground in the narrow space between the two buildings. The panels were then broken up and taken away. To protect the workers in the occupied building, a temporary wall was built and all works carried out without disturbance to the adjacent bankers.

Further expansion demanded the construction of a third building. To ensure all staff had internal access to all parts of the complex, this too was connected to the second building by means of a link building.
